10×10 Gable Shed Plans – Things to Consider in Building One

With its straightforward design and classic lines, it’s really no wonder why a gable style shed is the most typical shed we see these days. Compared to other shed, it’s pretty straightforward to build a gable shed. And the good thing is, there are lots of 10×10 gable shed plans you can choose from.

When you build a 10×10 shed in your yard, you not enjoy the benefit of having extra space to store things, you could unknowingly increase your property price as well. It’s a known fact that properties with extra well built structure have increased value in the market. A very good added benefit if you ask me.

Before you go hammering away, there are many things you need to prepare and thoroughly consider first. Among the important ones are the following:

Location

Of course, to build a 10×10 gable shed you’d obviously need an area in your property that’s more than that size. Make sure also that area you’ve chosen has additional room to make it easier for you to move around during construction.

Generally, important things to consider in choosing the best location for your shed is that it is not on property lines or septic tanks. An area with wet grounds does not make an ideal location as well. The soil could easily shift and the structure would gradually disintegrate when that happens.

When you’ve chosen a good area, make sure that you clean and clear the site. It would also be good to have an evenly leveled site.

Building Permits

A 10×10 gable shed would most like require a permit from your local government. You can inquire this information from the zoning department of your town or state. An inspector would check if you’re complying with proper building code implemented in your area. This is done to ensure your safety as well as that of your family and neighbors.

Before you apply for the permit, however, you need to prepare the permit drawings. This consist of site details, cross section as well as elevations.

10×10 Gable Shed Plans

Lastly, you will need to get your hands on excellent 10×10 gable shed plans. This will help you prepare beforehand the tools and materials needed for construction. Also, using the bills of materials included in the plan will help you calculate the estimated cost of the whole project. You will be able to budget appropriately your funds.

During construction, you will benefit greatly if you use plans with easy to implement instructions as well as detailed working diagrams. You will observe that you will be able to work faster if the written instruction is accompanied by clear illustrations.

So, if you’re in the process of going over 10×10 gable shed plans, I suggest you check out this really helpful resource here:

6 Steps to Get Rid of Ants in Your House

For most homeowners, ants can represent a serious problem. While there are many commercial products out there that promise to help you get rid of them, there are more naturals ways that are cheaper and healthier. Follows these steps and ants will vanish.

  1. Locate the place where the ants are entering the house. You can do this if you follow their trails.
  2. Buy Diatomaceous earth at your local hardware store and apply it to the holes or cracks where the ants enter. If you have trouble finding it, get baby powder as some contain this material. Check back regularly and if they’re still there, apply some more. Ants will not get close to this place, because they almost immediately die if they touch it.
  3. You can get rid of the remaining ants by spraying baby powder mixed with water on them. Make sure you sweep the floor after you do this.
  4. For a more animal friendly way of getting rid of ants, try to spray them with a peppermint essential oil / water mix. You can also soak a long piece of string in peppers or cinnamon and put it around your home.
  5. Consider planting mint plants along your house. Not only it’s useful for other things and gives a nice smell, but it t will keep the ants out forever.
  6. Keep your house clean. If you do your dishes regularly, mop the floor and wipe the kitchen tables every day, there won’t be any reason for ants to enter, as they’re looking for leftover foods and sugar.

10 Most Cited Reasons Why One Should Build Their Own Wooden Shed

As an independent wood construction consultant, I am asked many times WHY one should go into the hassle of constructing a wooden shed in their garden? It’s difficult to give a precise and concrete answer as the reasons will vary from person to person and from place to place. Therefore I decided to prepare a shortlist of the 10 most used reasons why somebody should build their own wooden shed:

  1. It’s really fun to do
  2. The newly build wooden shed greatly improves the value of your home
  3. It’s much cheaper to construct yourself than buying a ready build wooden shed
  4. If you build yourself, you can adapt your shed plan exactly to your specific needs and wishes
  5. If you do the project together with your kids it’s a great “family bond building” undertaking
  6. It really is not difficult if you have the proper shed design and building plan
  7. You can build a wooden shed for almost every possible use you need, be it a garden shed, a boat shed, garden tools shed, extra office room or whatever you want.
  8. Everything you made yourself will feel you much more proud than anything you bought ready-made
  9. You can adapt the style of your shed to the style of your house
  10. You yourself will select which materials or timber you will use, enabling you to buy specifically certified “green wood” for environmental reasons

These reasons are just a sample of the many benefits building yourself a wooden shed will give to you. I hope these will motivate many more people to decide to do so.

I know so many people who build their own wooden shed and almost without exception, all are very proud of what they build. But, on the other hand, many more people won’t even consider thinking about constructing something themselves. It seems we are living in a world where everybody only values things ready-made and bought in shops or stores. We forgot about the pleasures it brings to prepare, design and then actually construct things ourselves.

  • Then there are also the people who are thinking about constructing their wooden shed but are afraid to do so. The reasons might be manifold such as:
  • They have never ever constructed anything themselves
  • They feel they don’t have the skills to do so
  • They think it is too difficult or complicated to build themselves a wooden shed
  • They are afraid they are not being able to pull of the project themselves and will end up buying a ready-made shed anyway
  • They lack the confidence to involve themselves in a project like this
  • Or, maybe they are confident enough, but their family members, neighbors and / or friends are discouraging them!

If, however, you take a clear and objective look at the reasons why people decided to construct themselves a wooden shed and the reasons why people don’t try to build their wooden shed the conclusion is easy:

It really is possible, feasible, fun and economical to build your own shed!

Many people have done so and certainly they aren’t all wood-working experts or professionals. People of all ages and professions successfully build their own wooden shed and are extremely proud of it!

Best of luck with your construction!

A Beginner’s Guide to Woodworking – From Small Birdhouses to Large Storage Sheds

Perhaps you have been admiring some nice pieces of furniture or other wood decor that you really would like to have, but its just a bit to pricey. You start running the thought over in your mind that perhaps it wouldn’t be so difficult to build one of the pieces yourself, if you had some woodworking plans. Well believe it or not that maybe the very start to a long and enjoyable hobby.

To give yourself an idea if its something you really want to do, or something you can do, start off by observing. Try to find people that you know are quite handy with woodworking designs and find out if they mind if you watch them for awhile. Maybe you could even offer to help them out on a project or two. After awhile, if you find you haven’t lost interest then its time for you to get started on your own woodworking adventure. Maybe check around at the community colleges to see if they offer beginner’s courses specifically to do with woodworking plans. If they do and you have some spare time it would be advisable to participate in one. It will give you a sound start to as to knowing what your next step is, and what you require by way of investment in tools and supplies.

If you have taken a class you will probably have finished a few small projects. You are then ready to move on to a little bigger one. Don’t run out and start trying to build something really complex yet. If you don’t have the experience for this it can be costly and also discouraging if it doesn’t turn out perfect. Read and research. The internet is a wonderful to gather all types of information and tips. You can even get free woodworking plans.

Make sure when you are ready to start that you have a clean and spacious working environment that is ventilated. You will be exposing yourself to sawdust and fumes from finishing projects, especially when working with intricate woodworking designs. When you go to purchase your tools. Invest some money and buy some good quality ones but don’t go for the top of the line, it isn’t really necessary. Be sure to include some dust masks, safety goggles and gloves in your purchase list.

Make sure you read and understand thoroughly all of the instruction and safety precautions that came with your tools. Also learn the operating instructions so you can get the best of what your tools have to offer. Take your time in picking out your woodworking design. Try and find patterns that are rated by beginner, intermediate and advanced. This way you will be able to find projects that match your skills level.

Be sure to pat yourself on the back once and while when you have completed a project. It may not look perfect and probably isn’t yet but it will be before you know it, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Make it a practice to give yourself some good constructive criticism and learn from your mistakes.

6 Cheap Things You Can Do to Make Your Home More Livable

More and more people are resolving themselves to staying in their homes and not selling and buying another home. Some are just trying to maintain and hold on through the crises but it is hard because things are starting to break and you may not have the money to hire a professional to come in and get everything fixed. Here are 6 cheap things you can do that just might save you money, time and your relationship in this difficult time.

#1 Do not skimp on the maintenance for your big and small items. It is much better to get your heating and air guy out to your house at $100.00 to go through and check everything out than to buy a new heating and air unit that can cost up to $6,000 and more!

#2 Go through your house with a small can of lubricant oil, a screwdriver and pliers to check doors, windows, locks and anything else you may have that may need tightening. Make sure they are secure and the squeaks get oiled, locks work, etc. What you cannot fix, make a list of for the near future.

#3 Take it outside. Do the same thing outside of your home that you just did inside. Check rails, gates, fences and anything else you have outside that could potentially need repairing. What you cannot fix easily, add to your list.

#4 Take your compiled list to the library or get on the internet and start doing the research for each one of the issues you have found that you either do not know how to fix or need to replace. Do not rule out that what you think needs replacing can actually be fixed. It is amazing what you can find out if you try.

#5 Get some free help for anything you do not understand. This is much easier than you might think. Many local hardware stores have specialists that work in the department of their specialty and they also have free or very inexpensive classes to teach you how to do some simple repairs to some of the more difficult installations. Take advantage of these resources as they are there for you!

#6 Do the work. I cannot tell you how many times my wife and I have gathered all of the information and all the tools and supplies for a project and it takes us forever (or company coming over) for us to get it done. It is much more satisfying to just get those pesky projects behind you and if you can get them done with little or no money; it just makes it all the sweeter.

5 Top Hilti Gun Safety Suggestions

Hilti is one of the leading designers and suppliers of various fastening solutions both to the major level construction industry as well as the do it yourself domestic market. Hilti specializes in a number of different fastening design applications as well as a number of different power tools needed in order to create the best fastening application possible.

One of the most cutting edge industry leading designs of all time is the now famous Hilti Gun. The Hilti Gun is known all over the world as arguably the best power tool specifically intended for joining semi hard or rigid materials to other hard surfaces such as concrete walls or steel surfaces. The design is ingenious and features a powder actuated mechanism used to effectively drive fasteners into hard surfaces.

It is so named for a few very good reasons. It is an extremely powerful tool and is designed along similar principles to actual hand guns that fire live ammunition. Although in this case the Gun uses what is known as power loads, these are similar in application to a powder charge in a bullet, with about as much force and energy. Hilti Guns are specifically designed to drive equally specific pins and threaded studs into wood, steel and concrete. Because Hilti Guns are such powerful tools it is necessary that potential operators are fully trained in both the various uses of the Hilti Gun as well as the very critical associated safety precautions and procedures. Operators need to be trained by qualified training personnel and accredited before being able to use the Gun power tool either in commercial construction or private use.

Even though formal accredited training is required prior to purchase and employment of a Hilti Gun we can still discuss a few safety procedures and tips:

1. Always follow the instructions: This may seem obvious but you would be surprised at just how many people think they can just ‘figure it out’ as they go. It is essential that instructions and procedures are followed before and during the use of a Gun.

2. Selecting the appropriate power load: The power load is an important issue, Hilti have designed very specific power loads depending on the application needed. Make sure to choose the correct power load to avoid injury and possible surface damage.

3. Check the Gun: Much like a real gun the Hilti Gun needs to be checked before use or after use. Ensure that there is no previous load still in the Hilti Gun or that the gun is empty after use.

4. The Hilti Gun muzzle lock: This is a very important safety procedure provided by Hilti. The muzzle lock ensures that it is impossible to accidentally fire the gun in the air at anytime. To use the gun the operator has to apply adequate pressure to the surface before the gun will actuate and the operator will be able to fire the pin or threaded stud into the surface.

5. Always check the gun after use: It is always important to check the gun after using it to make sure there is no power load or pin or threaded stud still left in the Hilti Gun. The Hilti Gun is one of the most effective and convenient power tools of the modern industrial age, it can perform a multitude of functions on multiple surfaces and in a large variety of application scenarios. However it is also important to follow all safety procedures and take every precaution necessary.

A Beginner’s Guide For Building a Shed

Here are some guidelines for your consideration when designing or selecting shed plans for your outdoor storage shed or workshop shed.

Wiring For Lights, Heating, and Cooling

Most sheds are not wired. But for use during the evening, cold winter months, and hot summer months it might be wise to wire the shed for lighting, cooling, and heating. This will make it a lot more comfortable when spending time in the shed working on projects or repairing equipment.

Shed Materials

Most storage sheds are constructed of wood, vinyl, or steel. They can be purchased as a kit, may be delivered in one piece and installed, or may be built on site.

Storage sheds made of wood are usually built of pine, redwood, cedar, or pressure treated wood. Even though wood sheds offer an aesthetic look for the backyard area, they generally need upkeep and sealing to keep their look and color. Steel sheds and vinyl sheds on the other hand are more durable and both of them are fairly maintenance-free.

Shed Features

A few of the features of sheds include windows, skylights, shelves, lofts, and workbenches. Many owners decorate the shed to coordinate with other structures on the land such as the home. Many decorative touches consist of landscaping, outdoor lighting, accents for the storage shed, and integrating it with the backyard area.

You might want to look at integrating a loft for extra space for storage, or perhaps a workbench for extra work area. It is possible to transform the storage shed into your dreams with only a couple of add-ons and design features.

Shed Foundation

Prior to constructing the storage shed, it is very important to build a foundation for it to be secure. One of the most durable kinds of foundation is one made of concrete. You must build a frame to hold and form the concrete and level the ground where the concrete will be poured.

Entrance Ramp

It is also a good idea to give consideration to building a ramp for moving heavy equipment in and out of the shed. This may include large garden tools, lawn mowers, small tractors, and wheelbarrows.

Roof

The shed roof should be made of 5/8 inch wood decking, usually plywood, to keep the roof trusses connected. After the plywood and trusses are secured with screws or nails, you want to lay tar paper or asphalt shingles on the wood. Get some help when working on the roof is always a good idea.

Shed Accessories

You may want to add some accessories like shutters, window boxes and a weather vane to the storage shed to add some class. Your home and the area landscape could be used as an inspiration for designing them.

5 Steps To Creating A Counter

Creating a counter is easy but so many homeowners have not discovered this. Most of them like do-it-yourself approach but they do not know how to go about it. Some find it difficult to catch up with the assembly-line speed at which every counter is built. So, I have presented 5 simple step-by-step guidelines that will enable to create your counter quickly. Let us start right away.

Step 1: Get some medium-density fiberboard substrate and cut them to size. Then add a strip along the font edge that will be covered with laminate. This will produce a 1-inch overhang that will cover the seam between the top of the cabinets and the counter.

Step 2: Apply the edge laminate first after which you trim the excess. Because the top has a curved profile on one side, it is better to use a belt sander. But on a straight top, a specialized router, called a laminate trimmer, is used.

Step 3: Next, contact cement is applied to the substrate and the cut-to-fit laminate, if it is from Formica, it should be pressed into place. Also, use a squeegee to remove air bubbles and ensure full adhesion.

Step 4: Because the field laminates are usually cut slightly larger than the counter to counter help prevent mistakes, the excess is pared flush with a laminate trimmer.

Step 5: Cutouts for the sink and cook top are made with router and template. Most fabricators keep templates for different-size sinks, though some shops prefer to make the sink cutout on site when they are installing the countertops.

Now that you have learnt how to create a counter, go ahead and do it.

5 Steps to an Organized Closet

1) Become charitable, have a garage sale, or give your clothes to family and friends. Most of us keep way too many clothes in our closets. How many times have you switched out winter for summer clothes only to realize that you didn’t wear half of them? The first step to organizing your closet, or any other part of your home for that matter, is to get rid of junk. Start looking at extra things as “space stealers” instead of “things that I might eventually need”. Now that the excess is cleared out, you can work on the next phase of organization; categorizing.

2) Categorizing is probably the most important step in the organization process. If you can’t figure out what category something should go in, then it will inevitably become junk or clutter. Everything needs a place and before you can assign it one, it has to fit in with other things that you keep. If it’s pens and pencils, categorize it with office or school supplies. If it’s your son’s precious handprint mold or finger painting, categorize it as a keepsake. You can create categories and sub-categories to keep things organized. Depending on what you have, you may have an entire dresser dedicated to keepsakes, souvenirs, and memorabilia. One drawer could be things made by one child, another drawer for the other child, one for your husband’s keepsakes, and one for yours. The dresser top can be used to rotate things that you would like to look at into and out of storage.

3) The next step is to measure out how much space you will need to get your closet organized. Let’s say that you have a big stack of t-shirts. You can hang them and measure how much space they take up, or fold them and see how much of a shelf they will occupy. Write it down and then come back to it later. Do the same for your pants, dresses, skirts, shorts, socks, etc. Then you will have all of the data that you need to figure out which combination of bins, drawers, shelves and hanging rods will best accommodate your wardrobe. You may be amazed how much space you can save simply by swapping out a shelf designated for holding your shorts for a couple of cascading hangers that keep them wrinkle free and easy to access in a fraction of the space.

4) Now that you’ve figured out the most efficient arrangement for your clothing and accessories, think about what you use most. Most professional closet organizers will tell you to place the things that you use most front and center. If you store your socks up high on a shelf, you’re not very likely to keep putting your socks in there. You’ll end up making another pile somewhere that is more convenient. The key to staying organized is to make it as easy as possible to put things back where they go. You don’t want baskets with latching lids, for example. It’s much easier to toss things in without having to put everything down in order to open the lid.

5) You can make even more space and protect the investment that you have in your wardrobe by selecting the right
http://www.closethangerfactory.com”>clothes hangers for the job. You should always hang coats and suits on coat hangers or wood hangers that are curved to keep the shape of the shoulders. Your hangers should fit the space and the style of your closet. Choose ones that help you keep things organized. This could mean getting a few different types of specialty hangers for organizing belts and ties, cascading clothing, or simply choosing the ones that inspire you to keep the closet neat.
